Prehnite

Prehnite

Prehnite is a soft green-to-yellow stone with a smooth, pearly shine. Unlike labradorite or moonstone, it doesn't flash light between layers — its glow comes simply from its glassy, translucent surface catching the light evenly.

Where It Comes From

Prehnite was first found in 1774 at the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, by Dutch colonel Hendrik von Prehn — and it's named after him, making it one of the first minerals ever named after a person. Today it's also found in Australia, China, and Scotland.

What Different Peoples Believed

People What It Symbolized
South African tradition Its clustered, grape-like form gave it the nickname "grape jade."
Chinese tradition Valued for qualities similar to jade — courage, modesty, and wisdom.

Birth Month

Prehnite is not one of the 12 official birthstones and has no widely recognized birth month.
